Roman religion was much like Greek Mythology, except the gods and goddesses were named after planets, stars, and constellations. Some of the gods and goddesses were...
Jupiter- King of the gods.
Juno- Wife of Jupiter and goddess of the sky.
Mars- God of War
Mercury- The messenger of the gods
Neptune- God of the Sea
Janus- God of the Doorway
Diana- Goddess of Hunting
Vesta- Goddess of Hearth
Minerva- Goddess of Healing and Wisdom
Venus- Goddess of Love
These gods and goddesses were used to explain events in nature and in the ways of life that could not yet be understood. Because the Ancient Romans believed that the gods and goddesses controlled their lives, they spent lots of their time worshipping them. Some powerful emperors were also considered to be gods. Each god/goddess had his or her own holiday when the Ancient Romans celebrated him or her by having specialized festivals for them. The Romans would also go to the temple of the god/goddess they were worshiping that day to sacrifice animals as an offering to the god/goddess.
